Canada’s Women’s National Sitting Volleyball is composed of talent like no other, yet they have been fighting an uphill battle for their sport for years. Despite being a relatively new team in comparison to their international peers, the hopeful Canadians were podium contenders at the 2020 Paralympic Games. Unfortunately they suffered a heartbreaking loss to their rivals, Brazil, during the bronze medal match. This loss set a tone for the team, pushing themselves harder than ever before as they continued to compete at the highest level. Despite having come in 2nd at Worlds in 2023, the team has struggled to qualify for the upcoming 2024 Paralympic Games, solidifying themselves as underdogs in the most competitive zonal region for the sport, as they play catch up to the might of the USA and Brazilian teams.

Off the court, additional pressures burden the Team. Their family, friends and supporters can’t even watch the games. Sitting Volleyball, and the Paralympics in general, do not receive the same kind of support or coverage as sports featured in the Olympics. After the Olympic Broadcasting Services failed to keep their promise of providing more coverage at the 2020 Games, the team spearheaded a viral reaction online from Canadians back home. This caused CBC Sports to step up and provide media coverage of their games. The Team has now taken it upon themselves to press for better coverage at the 2024 Paralympic Games, becoming advocates for better Para Sport representation as a whole.
